we have at the nih, like the nih in general, a long-standing collaboration with colleagues at the va. many of our investigators work with the va investigators, many va investigators work with us. specific programs, we focused on over at recent times include programs in suicide prevention and in ptsd research. suicide prevention, we played an integral part in helping the va develop research to identify those veterans who are at highest risk of suicide. so that we can help them get into treatment and reduce the suicide rates among veterans. that's an ongoing program now that's being implemented throughout the veterans administration that will hopefully help save lives in the near future. we also are engaged in research programs, as i mentioned, particularly around ptsd, but in general around the mental health of veterans. one resource that the veterans administration has constructed, the million veterans program, is an area of active interest which we're engaged with them in trying to help our extramural investigators that we fund to use that data to better the health of veterans and re

what is nih doing to avoid reinventing the wheel and how is nih planning to leverage data -- already being done extramarital he? >> thank you that is a very important question. if we can connect different types of data so let's say data from jackson heart study with data from an alzheimer's disease database, the power of that could be enormous in terms of generating new ideas, new connections between these diseases or in the case between cardiovascular health and dementia. it might lead to new ideas about treatments that could be possible or early detection strategies. this is what we call interoperability making data in different languages essentially able to talk to each other so scientists can view that data for these kinds of discoveries. we are working very closely right now with our partners in academia as well as experts in the tech industry, particularly through the strides initiative. that is an arrangement with google and amazon we have right now to develop ways to connect the high-value data sets nih has to create this operability. we are definitely looking at past example
